What do all these people have in common????
They're Jewish and they're proud.

Woobury J.C. is proud of our Jewish Youth Groups. You can still join us! Our youth group - grades 8 through 12 (USY). All of our groups meet weekly.

USY is an international youth groups which also have events outside the synagogue such as dances, kinnusim (weekend retreats for USY), shabbatonim (weekend retreats for Kadima), trips, sports events, interchapter events and much, much more. We're here to bring exciting, fun-filled programs to you. But we can't do it alone...

USY is not just meetings in the temple…it is so much more! It is an opportunity to take a break from school and home. We combine with other united youth on Long Island for bowling, dancing, and partying. We will go on conventions and have events with high school students from all over New York. Each year there are International Conventions where you have the opportunity to meet others from all over the country. USY has camps such as teen travel, which go across the United States and opportunities to explore areas throughout the world! So come out to a meeting and see how great this year will be.

Passover, Passover, what a crazy, wonderful time of year! I’ve always loved this holiday, and the spring it brings with it, but this year I am especially excited about the events WoodUSY has tentatively scheduled as we celebrate Passover, and all of April.

Our first Passover event will be a trip to the Matzah Factory. The WoodUSY board suggested that since this was fun activity in nursery school, it was well worth doing again now that we’re older and wiser. The trip will be on March 26th. On April 6th we are going to have a chocolate seder at the WJC. A chocolate seder contains all the elements of the traditional Haggadah, but is mostly a chance to scarf down chocolate with your USY friends.

On April 13th (which is during Passover), WoodUSY is invited to the Chazak Matzah Ball Dance, which is hosted by the western Long Island division of USY. There will be information available on facebook.

On April 23rd we are going to be having a creative community service opportunity at the WJC. We will be making blankets for Project Linus , which gives children in need of a sense of warmth and comfort a handmade blanket. They have distributed over two million blankets since 1995. We will be making blankets that do not require sewing skills or any previous knowledge, so everyone is invited to attend. Community service credit will be awarded for participation in this event.

We will conclude April with the celebration of another holiday, Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day on April 28th. We will express our love for our Jewish homeland by discussing previous experiences in Israel, USY’s summer programs to Israel, and by decorating and then eating a 61st birthday cake made to look like the map of Israel.

In April you should also receive your application to attend METNY Regional Convention, which will be held May 15th-17th. Convention is a fun weekend with USY at a hotel, and includes both divisional and regional elections, attending gives you a voice in USY politics. There is also a simultaneous program for eighth graders, for which I will also have applications.

Have a great month, and as always, let me know if you have any USY questions at: WoodburyUSY@gmail.com

Shalom,
Loen Amer
WJC USY Director
